If you make a cash payment of more than $10,000 to San Diego State University, in one transaction or in two or more accumulated transactions, we are required by federal law to report it to the IRS using Form 8300, “Report of Cash Payments Over $10,000 Received in a Trade or Business.”
Cash includes:

Traveler’s checks

Money orders
When We Report
We must file Form 8300 within 15 days of receiving your cash payment (or multiple accumulated payments) that total $10, 000 or more within a 12-month period.
Written Notice
If you are named on a Form 8300, SDSU will send you a written statement by January 31 of the following year.
Who Handles It
The University Bursar’s Office issues Form 8300.
What You Need to Bring for Cash Payments

A government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.).
SDSU student IDs are not accepted. -
A completed Cash Intake Form (available online or at the University Bursar’s Office).

Payments are “accumulated” if they are made within 12 months for the same purpose—for example, multiple tuition or housing payments that add up to more than $10,000 in cash.
No. Form 8300 reporting only applies to cash and cash equivalents such as currency, money orders, and traveler’s checks.
