Past Due Student Accounts

Current students with an outstanding balance should make a payment on their my.SDSU account immediately to avoid late fees or having a hold placed on their registration. The University Bursar’s Office will provide necessary assistance to any student who has fallen behind in paying their current term fees. For specific questions regarding your my.SDSU account and/or charges please contact the Cal Coast Student Financial Center.

30-Days Past Due Student Accounts

Student accounts past due by 30 days or more will result in having an ‘Outstanding Debt’ indicator in the hold section of the Student Financial Account Tile. Upon payment of past due balance(s), the hold will be removed within 24 - 48 hours. If the account remains past due, you will continue to receive communication and a final demand for payment. Student accounts in this group have the following impacts:

  • Not allowed to receive a diploma
  • May not be eligible to add any classes
  • May not receive aid disbursements

120+ Days Past Due Student Accounts

While the Bursar’s is always available to help students who are past due; regrettably, student accounts past due by 120 or more can result in the university submitting the past due amount to an external collections agency and the State of California Franchise Tax Board in addition to penalties and fees.

Student accounts in this category have the following impacts:

  • Not allowed to receive a diploma.
  • May not be eligible to add any classes, per Title 5, California Code of Regulations, Section 42380 and 42381. CSU is authorized to withhold certain services to the student until the educational debt is paid. See also CSU Executive Order No 145
  • Any state tax refund or lottery winnings can be intercepted by the State of California to pay the past due amount. Per California Government Code Sections 12419.2, 12419.7, 12419.9, 121419.10, 12419.11, and 12419.12.
  • Collection agency reporting of the debt to three major credit bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax, Experian) with the potential to negatively impact credit rating for several years.

Repayment Options

While SDSU offers payment plans to all students to spread out the payment of tuition and fees during the fall and spring semesters, there are occasions when a student may encounter unexpected hardships and require more time to pay. In such cases, SDSU may offer a Courtesy Repayment Agreement that allows additional time to pay while preventing the debt from being sent to a collection agency. Depending on the situation, we may refer you to a retention specialist for a short-term arrangement. It is important to note that this agreement does not allow for registration.

Requirements for a Courtesy Repayment Agreement:
  • The number of months, monthly payment, and due dates are determined by SDSU and are not negotiable. The maximum amount of time for this agreement is 12 months/1 year.
  • The courtesy agreement will be documented with the number of months, amount of payment, and due date(s) and must be signed by the student and returned to Bursar’s Internal Collections for the agreement to be valid. Otherwise, agreements not returned are considered null and void.
  • Courtesy agreements do not remove any holds related to student debt. You will not be allowed to register, receive your diploma , or receive other services. Upon completing the agreement and paying off the debt, any existing hold related to student debt would be removed within 24 hours.
  • Any skipped, missed, or partial payments may automatically void the courtesy agreement.  The account may be immediately forwarded to an external collection agency, with the reporting of the debt to various credit bureaus and the potential to negatively impact credit rating for several years. Please contact us if you have any questions or issues that arise during the payment process.
  • Upon successful completion of the terms of the courtesy agreement, the student will avoid having the debt reported to the three major credit bureaus and California Franchise Tax Board.

Requirements for Student Accounts with charges:

Before separating from SDSU it is expected that a student’s account is paid in full.  However, if full payment is
not possible, Bursar’s Internal Collections can assist with a Courtesy Repayment Agreement.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  To avoid a debt becoming delinquent and avoid any potential collection activities,
SDSU strongly recommends that current and former students monitor their student account and campus email
on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis for up to 6 months after leaving the university.  While an account may
have a zero balance upon leaving the university, account adjustments (such as a reduction in financial aid,
waivers, bad payments, etc.) can occur after the last term attended is over; resulting in a debt owed to the
university.  When this occurs, an email would be sent to a student’s campus email, informing them of a new
balance owed on their student account.

Online and Alternative Payment Options

An eCheck, or electronic check, is a form on online payment using the checking account and routing numbers of your bank account. Note: your debit card or credit card number cannot be used. This transaction is made via a processes called ACH (Automated Clearing House).

Notices Regarding eCheck:

  • Only regular checking accounts at domestic banks (including most credit unions) may be used.
  • eChecks are not automatically approved by your bank and may take up to three business days (72 hours) to be posted to your account.
  • Despite the delay in processing, be sure that there are sufficient funds in the account during the entire process
If a transaction is returned as invalid due to insufficient funds or erroneous account number(s) you will be charged a $35 dishonored check fee (late fees may also apply).

Credit card payments are normally posted to your student account in real-time. A 2.65% service charge will be assessed to credit card payments.

If a payment is returned by the bank for any reason you will be billed a $35 dishonored payment fee, in addition to the $20 late fee if applicable.

SDSU has partnered with Convera and Flywire to provide a convenient and secure online payment option for international students.

All students paying in foreign currency should use the IFT option through Transact in my.SDSU. Payments are automatically posted to your student account once received.

Wires through Convera and Flywire offer favorable exchange rates and eliminate bank fees typically associated with wire transfers.
