529 Plan

A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged savings account designed to be used for the beneficiary's education expenses. The account holder can use the funds to pay all or a portion of a student's Tuition and Fees at SDSU. We recommend that you request funds a month in advance to ensure that our office receives payment in time for registration.

Direct 529 Plan Payments Via the Online Student Account

When selecting to pay a charge on the my.SDSU portal (student's payment portal) "529 Plan" is an payment option. Below is a list of 529 Plans that are available when paying with a 529 online.

Making Payments With 529 Plans Unavailable for ePayment

529 Plans that are not included in the ePayment list above are not accepted by our payment processing system. In such cases the account holder should contact their financial adviser or institution to arrange payment to SDSU. Payment options vary for each Plan, but common options are shown below for your reference. Note: if your 529 Plan is not compatible with our ePayment system you are strongly encouraged to begin the payment process with your financial institution a month in advance of a payment deadline.

Most 529 Plans will send payment to SDSU via a check with reference. Your financial institution should include the following information:

  • Student's first & last name
  • Student's RedID number
  • What charges the 529 check is paying

To ensure that your 529 payment is received and posted to your student's account in a timely manner we strongly encourage that certified mail is used through private companies such as FEDEx or UPS. If these options are not available it is important that you initiate the payment process at least month in advance to ensure sufficient time for the payment to be processed.

A few 529 Plans will permit account holders to transfer 529 funds to their personal checking account. After transferring funds you would pay SDSU directly via electronic check through my.SDSU. Note: consult with your tax professional and/or financial adviser before pursuing this option as there may be tax implications.
